Omega Juicer (model 1000)
The Omega Juicer range has been around for over 40 years and like the
ever popular Champion Juicer
the Omega 1000 is a testament to a great initial design.
The
Omega 1000 is a centrifugal
juicer that operates at about 3600 RPM and is capable of juicing vegetables
and fruit. It is not suitable for juicing wheatgrass or greatly efficient
at juicing leafy greens. Centrifugal juicers work by feeding the produce
down upon a cutting blade to break the fibres of the produce after which
the pulp is spun at high speeds in the pulp basket so that the juice is
extracted by centrifugal force.
The Omega juicer range look stylish in a timeless design. The Omega 1000
is surgical stainless steel (polished and brushed effect) and white plastic
and at 12" high by 10" wide fits easily onto the kitchen worktop.
The rubber feet that are attached to the base of the machine to protect
your worktop and to help to stop the juicer 'walking' along the worktop
when in use. As with other non pulp ejecting centrifugal models the machine
will start to walk across the desktop when the basket fills up and is
not emptied. This means you must stop the machine and empty the basket
typically after around every 4 fluid ounces of juice has been made. Certain
types of produce (soft produce such as oranges or peaches) tend to cause
walking of the juicer more than harder produce (such as carrots).
Omega optional extras
Assembly of the juicer parts if fairly straightforward and only takes
a minute. The latch arms securely lock the assembled parts together so
the juicer is ready to operate and they require very little effort to
fix in place. These latch arms have been adopted by many other juicer
manufacturers since the original Omega design.
Although the Omega 1000 is capable of peeled citrus fruits in its default
format there is also an optional citrus press attachment available to
buy separately which uses transforms the juicer into a citrus press operating
at 250 RMP which can quickly juice unpeeled, halved oranges, grapefruit,
limes and lemons.
The removable stainless steel parts (including pulp basket and shredder
blade) of the juicer are dishwasher safe. With time the white plastic
parts may become discoloured due to the effects of the juices (beetroot
anyone?) but these can be soaked overnight in water with washing up liquid.
The most difficult task of cleaning a centrifugal juicer is removing
pulp fragments from the pulp basket mesh. A toothbrush is ideal for this
but the process can be made even easier by using optional cellulose fibre
filters that fit in the pulp basket and let the juice through but trap
the pulp before it comes into contact with the basket mesh. These optional
filters also have the effect of filtering more of the pulp out of the
juice so the juice is extremely pulp free.
With the Omega 1000 the pulp is not ejected as on some centrifugal models
such as the L'equip mini pulp ejector. Because the pulp is retained in
the pulp basket the pulp is subject to centrifugal force for a longer
time so more juice can be extracted. It also means that the juicer does
not have to operate at such a high speed as pulp ejecting juicers that
must have extremely high speeds to force the pulp up the basket walls
so it can be expelled. The slower RPM benefits the juice quality as less
air is introduced into the juice when compared with pulp ejecting models
and so less oxidation of nutrients occurs.
The Omega 1000 comes with a 10 year warranty which shows the confidence
that the manufacturers have in the reliability and durability of their
juicer.
