Mango Lassi


Serving: 2 small / 1 large glass

Smoothie ingredients

1 mango
150 ml natural live yoghurt
100 ml milk (you can use a milk alternative such as soy milk if you wish)
3 ice cubes
2 tbsp runny honey
Pinch of salt (optional)
3-4 mint leaves (optional) or pinch of cardamom powder (optional)

Overview

Lassi is a yoghurt based drink that is highly popular in India and it has an incredible cooling effect. Because of this Lassi goes well with spicy food but it equally tasty when drunk on its own. The most popular type of lassi is probably Mango lassi and this soft fruit makes an excellent ingredient for a fruit smoothie.

Mangoes can be juiced but when the juice that comes out of the juicer tends to be very thick and contain pulp which can make it hard to drink it as a 'juice'. However when blended a mango seems to be in its perfect form for which to take in its distinctive sweet flavours.

Mangoes are high in betacarotene and other caretenoids which help fight free radicles, slow the signs of ageing, and protect the skin. In India the Mango is as prevalent as the orange is in the West, indeed mango juice is the equivalent of orange juice in popularity Like oranges, mangoes are also a good source of vitamin C which helps to strengthen the immune system.

Yoghurt and milk are a good source of calcium which is needed for healthy bone development and strength. You can make your own yoghurt quite simply. If you are sensitive to dairy products you could try using goats or sheeps milk to make your yoghurt as our bodies find goats / sheeps milk easier to digest. Other milk alternatives include soya milk and nut milks.

Directions

Mango lassi is fairly simple to make and the basic ingredients are listed above along with other ingredients that can add subtle taste balances to the recipe to suit your tastes, indeed you can add a sweet or savoury tint to the flavour.

Put all the ingredients except the ice into your smoothie maker / blender and whizz until the mixture is smooth. Add the ice and blend again until the mixture starts to froth up a bit. Serve straight away whilst cool.
