Twin Health living juice extractor - Happy Juicer review

The first thing I noted when unpacking the Twin Health living juice extractor was that it was noticeably bigger than the centrifugal and champion juicers. Lifting the twin health (although you won't want to be doing that to often as it weighs in at 24 pounds) you get a feel for it's heavy, solid build quality. The body has rubber feet which stop it slipping around on the worktop and the body is covered by an easy to clean plastic shell whilst other parts such as the twin gears, the screw and the screen netting are made of stainless steel.

The following accessories come included with the juicer, - a wooden pusher for pushing the produce down the feeding chute onto the twin gears, a large bottle brush that does an excellent job of cleaning the nooks and crannies of the juicer parts and 3 different juicing screen nettings for juicing different types of produce. There is also a blank screen that can be used to produce homogenised products. Two perspex collection containers with pouring spouts are provided which fit snugly into the juicer body, one is for juice collection, the second for pulp collection.

Assembling the twin health juicer was not as intuitive as some other juicers and a thorough read of the manual is recommended before you try and use the machine. The twin gears must be aligned correctly with each other and red dots on the end of the gears enable you to do this. You then need to choose the appropriate screen, there is a screen for soft fruit (large holes), fruit and vegetables (medium holes) and vegetable screen (small - 0.25mm holes). Use the vegetable screen for wheatgrass. From a convenience point of view the multiple screens are not good as it means you have to disassemble the juicer, change the screen and reassemble the juicer if you are making a juice recipe with ingredients that cover more than one of the screen types, e.g. oranges and carrots. However the different screens make the juicing process more efficient by targeting the type of produce being juiced. After a few uses the Twin Health assembly process becomes second nature and takes under a minute.

Using the Twin Health juicer
The Twin Health living juice extractor has to be one of the quietest juicers around, those with sensitive ears may find this makes the juice making process more pleasurable than when using a noisier juicer such as the Champion. One of the reasons for the low motor noise is the fact that the Twin Health has a very low RPM in fact it is around 70-80 RPM. This means that less air is introduced into the juice by the juicing process which in turn means that the juice can be kept longer before it oxidises and valuable nutrients are lost.

The feeding chute of the twin health is very narrow compared to some other juicers such as the Magimix Le Duo and is slightly narrower than the Champion. This means that you will need to cut your ingredients up into small pieces, this can lengthen juice preparation time. Produce should be fed into the juicing chamber slowly, when first using the machine I was feeding the produce to fast and this resulted in the juicer producing frothy juice and the clogging up of the screens and gears which then needed disassembling and cleaning before juicing could resume. Feeding the produce into the machine at a slower pace helped to cure this problem.

The Twin Health is a wheatgrass capable juicer and coped well with the super food, once the twin gears had a hold on the wheatgrass they pulled the rest of the grass through with no need for additional pushing. I found that a better juice yield was achieved by alternating wheatgrass with carrots. The wheatgrass juice produced was again of very good quality although a small amount of froth was present.

The Twin Health also features an 'Intelligent' sensor that can detect when the machine is overloaded and either reverses the gear direction or stops the gears. This is said to prevent the need to disassemble the juicer due to the gears and gear housing chamber becoming clogged up and also prevents improper materials entering the juicer. The intelligent sensors also help to extend motor life by preventing overload and excessive strain. A voice function also comes with the juicer that gives you an overview of the twin health functions but this is little more than a gimmick in our eyes and does not contribute to how the machine operates.

The juice yield from the twin health was very respectable when testing carrots and excellent when testing with apples. The twin health juicers juice quality was noticeably very good, the juice tasted full and rich although sometimes especially with soft fruits the juice contained a considerable amount of pulp which may have 'bulked up' the apparent juice yield.

Disassembling the Twin Health proved to be fairly straightforward, just reversing the assembly process. There are quite a few parts to clean after disassembling the juicer but they are all fairly easy to clean with the supplied brush. The juicer body also needs a wipe down afterwards as juice tends to creep out the back of the gear housing unit.

Who is the Twin Health most suitable for?

We would recommend the twin health to those who are looking for the maximum nutrient content out of their juicing routines. The fact that the Twin Health gears operate at such a low RPM means that very little air is introduced into the juice, this helps reduce the rate at which nutrients are lost from the juice. The lower heat also means that fewer enzymes are destroyed.

We would also recommend the Twin Health to someone who was looking to juice mainly vegetables, wheatgrass, and other leafy greens.

We would not recommend the Twin Health to people who were looking to juice mostly fruits, those who were on a tight budget or those who were looking for a juicer that fitted into a busy schedule!
