Wheatgrass Juicers – not the same as fruit and vegatable juicers

Wheatgrass juicers enable you to efficiently extract the great natural wonder that is wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass contains every single vitamin (apart from vitamin D) and is packed full of live enzymes, minerals and phytochemicals. Juicers that juice fruit and vegetables are not always suitable for juicing wheatgrass. Wheatgrass juicers have to be capable of extracting juice from the tough fibres of the wheatgrass. They also tend to work at much slower speeds than say centrifugal fruit and vegetable juicers. The lower juicing speed results in less heat and less oxidation of valuable nutrients.

A normal vegeatable juicer tears / grates / bites the vegetable fibres to release the juice. A wheatgrass juicer works by squeezing and pressing the wheatgrass fibres. This type of action can be likened to a mangle wringing water out of your wet laundry.

Manual wheatgrass juicers are available such as the Z star by Tribest. You need to turn the handle as you feed the wheatgrass through the juicer. The advantage with these manual extractors is that it is easy to re-feed the pulp back through the juicer to extract the maximum amount of juice possible. They are also good for the environment as they aren’t using electricity :-). The limiting factor of these manual wheatgrass juicers is the fact that they tend to be rather limited in what they can juice. They are normally not capable of efficiently extracting juice from fruit and vegetables. Also be careful of models made of iron as these can start to rust over time.

Electric wheatgrass juicers offer benefits to those who those who have restricted mobility and find using a manual juicer awkward. Models such as the Green Star and Twin Health are also very efficient at juicing fruit and vegetables. Electric wheatgrass juicers tend to be a quite a bit more expensive than their manual siblings.

The taste of wheatgrass is not for everyone, some people like it, some prefer to mix it with another type of fresh juice such as carrot juice to hide the taste. I know I love the taste, it tastes and smells so fresh you know it’s going to be good for you. If you don’t like the taste and are only purchasing one juicer then be sure to choose one that is capable of juicing other fruit and vegetables.
